Description

Non-Ionic Polyacrylamide (NPAM) for Water Treatment

NPAM is a candidate for industrial wastewater clarification, process-water treatment and other solid-liquid separation steps where a nonionic flocculant is being evaluated. It is not a universal fit for every water or slurry, so testing should guide the final choice.

Where NPAM may be evaluated

01 · Industrial wastewater clarification
Evaluate NPAM when suspended solids need to be gathered for clarification and downstream separation.
02 · Process-water solid-liquid separation
Compare grades against the actual solids, water chemistry and separation equipment used in the process.
03 · Compare polymer grades
Compare NPAM with available charged grades using representative water or slurry and the same separation equipment.

How NPAM is selected

  1. Characterize the process. Review suspended solids, pH, ionic conditions, particle behavior and the downstream separation equipment.

  2. Compare available grades. Check the current TDS or COA for molecular weight, solids content, particle size and other grade-specific values.

  3. Run representative trials. Compare solution preparation, mixing, dosing location and working dose with jar, bench or plant testing.

  4. Confirm operating documents. Follow the applicable TDS and SDS for preparation, handling, storage and site safety requirements.

Technical Requirements

The following limits are from an inspection report for one tested NPAM grade. The 12–18 million product-family range shown above is not a result from that report.

Test itemRequirement
AppearanceWhite granular powder
Solids content≥88.0%
Degree of hydrolysis≤5.0%
Residual acrylamide monomer, dry basis≤0.05%
Dissolution time at 1 g/L≤90 min
Residue on 1.00 mm sieve≤2%
Residue on 180 μm sieve≥88%
Water-insoluble matter≤1.0%

These tested-grade limits are not specifications for every NPAM grade. Confirm the exact product, molecular-weight measurement basis and current TDS/COA before ordering.

Storage and handling

  • Keep the package sealed in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight.

  • Keep the powder dry to reduce caking and handling problems.

  • Follow the product SDS and the safety procedures at the application site.
